MY DIFFERENT ROLES

From the musical viewpoint, I’m 80% piano teacher, 15% vocal teacher, 5% songwriter and an avid performer.

From the management viewpoint, I’m 100% arts administrator, accounts manager, recruiter, marketer, web designer and system analyst - in the name of music, of course!

Often people wonder what I do for a living. In short, I would just tell them: “I manage my own music teaching business.”. “Oh, so what instrument do you teach? Where do you teach?” I was often asked the same questions by different people. I presume not many people meet music teachers everyday.

Sometimes, I just gave them my namecard which would have the keypoints of what I do and followed up with a brief description of my portfolio. If that is not enough, I would refer them to my website which has more details of my profile.

People find it interesting that music is my profession and that I get to deal with music daily. Yes, it’s really a blessing to be able to combine work with interest. What more could I ask for? I have always been in contact with music — from my growing up years involving in music lessons and activities, to working with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as an arts administrator managing concerts and educational outreach, to being a full-time music teacher in schools and my music studio — I am really privileged to have music in my life!

Yet, there’s still so much more to do involving music! It sets me thinking at times: Is that all? What more can I do with music? I believe I just need to do my best for every role I’m taking on now and wait for God to reveal His plans for me!

So next time if you get to meet me personally and wish to find out about my job, please be all ears!
